Daumier and the Human Comedy

to Japanese page
In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Honoré Daumier (1808-1879), we are proud to present the exhibition "Daumier and the Human Comedy”.
Honoré Daumier, unparalleled French caricaturist, is well praised for his lithographs which are vividly depicting daily life in Paris in the 19th century. His contribution to journals such as 'La Caricature' lead him to achieve a remarkable success in political journalistic world. Working 40 years as an artist, he left more than 4,000 lithographs, most of which still has a powerful effect as a reflection of our modern society today, even 2 centuries after the artist's time.

The exhibition consists of 2 parts.

Daumier's representative lithographs will be shown in Part 1.
The artist's excelled drawing ability and his careful observation of the society made his works well popular amongst Parisians, and such aspects will be studied in his lithographical social caricatures and political caricatures.

The 2nd part of the exhibition will examine Japanese people's appreciation of Daumier's works introduced to this country pre-World War II. Display includes not only his important lithographs but also his fine oil paintings, bronze sculptures, and drawings in other medium. Japanese magazines and journals at the time which carried Daumier's art will be also on display.

We hope you will share and enjoy Daumier's exquisite sense of humour, as much as people in the 19th century Paris would have done.
