About the Museum

The Itami City Museum of Art opened in 1987 in the center of the historic town of Itami. Known as the birthplace of sake, Itami flourished during the Edo period as a cultural town attracting renowned poets and artists.
Since its start, the Museum expanded its collection based on the fundamental theme of ‘humor and satire’. The collection spans from 18th century English satirical prints to present day works related to humor from in and around the world. Noteworthy is our main collection of over 2,000 works by Honoré Daumier, one of the leading artists in 19th century France. As to follow this collection, we hold caricature works of his French contemporaries, satirical prints from 18-19th century British artists, as well as works of 20th century German artists. Other collection includes prints, paintings, and sculptures of contemporary artists from Japan and abroad.
Selected works from our collection are on exhibit presenting local, national and international artists. We also hold several special exhibitions each year where the Museum aims to explore a wider range of interests. The Museum organizes lectures and workshops relevant to our exhibitions throughout the year.
